The CDC has published data on its website indicating that there may be as many as 2.5 million defensive firearm uses (DGUs) in the United States each year.
Defensive firearm use does not require one to fire their gun in self-defense, but is defined as a case where a person brandishes their gun to fend off a potential attacker.
The CDC originally cited data that there may be between 60,000 and 2.5 million defensive uses of firearms each year.
Their website no longer cites specific data, but simply states that estimates of defensive gun uses vary.
A report by The Epoch Times says the CDC pulled the data after coming under pressure from gun control advocates.

The report, which resulted from a FOIA request by a gun rights group, reveals that the CDC removed the data after meeting with Po Murray, president of the Newtown Action Alliance.
The Epoch Times Reports: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) removed gun data from its website after holding a private meeting with gun control activists, according to newly leaked emails.

The CDC’s web page titled “Fast Facts: Firearm Violence Prevention” includes a section on the defensive use of firearms, or instances where people use guns defensively.
The section defines defensive firearm use and originally stated: “Estimates of defensive firearm use vary depending on the questions asked, populations studied, timing, and other factors related to study design. The Research Priorities for Reducing the Threat of Gun Violence report indicates a range of 60,000 to 2.5 million defensive gun uses each year. »
The page now says, “Estimates of defensive weapon use vary depending on the questions asked, populations studied, time period, and other factors related to study design. Given the wide variability in estimates, further research is needed to understand the prevalence, frequency, circumstances, and outcomes of defensive weapon use. »
