TWITTER, THE FBI SUBSIDIARY
The Epoch time reports that new documents reveal how the US government used a shadowy Twitter portal to censor Covid-19 related content that contradicted government rhetoric.
As part of its ongoing investigation into Twitter’s censorship practices, America First Legal has obtained a fourth set of documents (pdf) exposing a secret Twitter portal, which US government officials used to censor dissenting views regarding Covid-19 in violation of the First Amendment. It’s a revelation that Elon Musk called a “extremely worrying”.
The documents reveal that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) worked with UNICEF, the World Health Organization and Mafindo to mitigate “misinformation”. Mafindo is a third-party partner of Facebook Indonesia-based, Google-funded fact-checker known for censoring searches for words such as “Coronavirus” and “Covid-19” and for blocking information about adverse effects and deaths caused by the Covid‑19 vaccines.
Facebook launched its third-party fact-checking program in 2016, working with fact-checkers around the world certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) affiliated with the Poynter Institute (a media research institute ). The IFCN states on its website that “Non-partisan and transparent fact-checking can be an effective tool of responsible journalism”. However, among its advisory board members, US-based representatives come from liberal-leaning media outlets such as the washington post and PolitiFact (also affiliated with the Poynter Institute).
The Twitter portal
On March 10, 2021, an email from a Facebook employee responsible for US public policy to several CDC employees discussed the “social media giant’s weekly sync with CDC”adding that the CDC should “invite other public bodies if necessary”.
A March 24, 2021 email from the same Facebook employee to the CDC stated: “This is my regular FB meeting and we would like to discuss two misinformation topics” as well as “misinformation that has already been removed”.
On May 10, 2021, a Twitter employee recommended a CDC official sign up for Twitter’s Partner Support Portal, which he described as “the best way to get documents like this reviewed”.
On May 11, 2021, the CDC manager therefore registered her personal Twitter account on the Twitter partner assistance portal, she would therefore benefit from a “Special and accelerated notification flow in the Twitter Help Center”.
Content removed by Facebook
On the side of Facebook, the Community Standards Manual dated May 19, 2021 reveals how the company is working with parliamentarians, legal advisers and human rights activists to develop policies aimed at “enable 50 million people to take one more step towards vaccination” all in “Combating Covid‑19 and vaccine misinformation” and in “addressing global immunization challenges”. Methods used to achieve this include removing “false information that has been denied by public health specialists” and rejection of advertisements that violate its policies, “including those that discourage vaccination”. Facebook is also reducing the distribution of “misleading claims assessed by independent fact-checkers”.
Posts that Facebook removes — that the CDC or other public health authority deems “false and likely to contribute to imminent violence or physical harm” – include:
– claims that Covid-19 is no more dangerous than the flu or the common cold; – claims that Covid-19 cannot be transmitted in certain climates, weather conditions or locations; – claims that, for the average person, something can guarantee the prevention of infection with Covid-19 or can guarantee the cure of Covid-19 before such a cure or prevention has been approved ; – claims that Covid-19 tests cause cancer; – claims regarding the availability or existence of Covid‑19 vaccines; – statements questioning the safety or serious side effects of Covid-19 vaccines; – claims questioning the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines; – claims about how the Covid‑19 vaccine was developed or about its ingredients; – claims involving conspiracy theories about Covid-19 vaccines or vaccination programs.
Content deemed to be “invalidated” includes, but is not limited to, the following statements: “vaccines cause the disease they are supposed to protect against, or make the person more susceptible to contracting the disease”, “Natural immunity is safer than vaccine-acquired immunity” and “Vaccines are not effective in preventing the disease against which they are intended to protect.”
Repeat offenders face restrictions “such as (but not limited to) reducing their exposure, withdrawing recommendations” or removal from the site.
These sanctions were taken despite evidence that vaccines do not prevent transmission, that vaccines cause adverse effects and even death, and that more vaccinated people now die than unvaccinated people. Even the CDC admitted in June that those vaccinated could contract the disease again.
“The coolest speakeasy against disinformation”
In August 2021, Google’s Asia Pacific (APAC) News Lab Manager emailed a CDC strategist inviting her to the APAC Trusted Media Summit. The CDC’s vaccine trust strategist then emailed the organizer of Google’s Trusted Media Summit for APAC, in which she expressed her excitement at being invited to this event. that she called “the coolest speakeasy [bar clandestin de la prohibition] fight against disinformation.
The same CDC employee was then invited to the summit to give a talk about how CDC, WHO and other international organizations work together to fight a “infodemic” [pandémie de fausses informations] and use “social inoculation” in order to mitigate it.
An Oct. 28 email from CDC to the Twitter team concerned preliminary discussions about CDC’s communications program regarding “pediatric vaccines”.
An email dated November 2, 2021, sent by a Facebook employee to several CDC employees, concerned the “vaccine misinformation” relating to the authorization for emergency use. The Facebook employee was informing CDC employees that Meta had “launched a new feature on Instagram, where accounts that repeatedly post content that violates Covid-19 policies or vaccine misinformation can now lose the ability to be tagged or mentioned or can see pop-ups. ups asking if they want to remove some posts that may violate policies”.
Meta prides itself on having deleted more than 16 million posts on Facebook and Instagram, including more than 2 million between February and May 2021.
The America First Legal Publication Series
The first post of documents by America First Legal reveals the explicit collusion between the CDC and Big Tech to censor what the Biden administration considered “disinformation” and promote highly biased Covid-19 propaganda. The second release from America First Legal helped build a case from evidence showing that the CDC sent specific messages to Facebook and Twitter to be taken down, suppressed, censored or reported. The third release of America First Legal revealed that the CDC’s policies regarding masks for school children were driven by dark money from a liberal group, The Kaiser Family Foundation.
