Sputnik reports that Volodymyr Zelensky asked to deliver a message before the World Cup final, but FIFA gave him a red card, reports CNN. However, negotiations are still ongoing.

Volodymyr Zelensky has indeed asked to share a video with supporters of the Lusail stadium in Doha before the kick-off of the final, reports CNN, citing an official familiar with the matter. An idea that does not thrill FIFA, which is closing the door for the Ukrainian President for the time being. However, negotiations are still ongoing.

The idea may seem far-fetched but hardly surprising on the part of Volodymyr Zelensky, who has multiplied appearances during major media masses in recent months. The Ukrainian President thus made appearances on screen at the last Cannes Film Festival, at the Grammy Awards and even at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

A media omnipresence that ended up annoying some observers. The photo session of the Ukrainian leader for the glamorous magazine Vogue had notably created controversy.

A highly politicized World Cup

The World Cup, which will end on December 18 with a France-Argentina final, has seen various similar controversies flourish. Some European teams, such as Germany, have for example asked to wear a armband in LGBT colors “One Love”, a request refused by FIFA.

These same German players had also responded to this ban by masking their mouths, during a pre-match photo against Japan.

Faced with these controversies, some have called not to mix sport and politics. “We must not politicize sport”, declared the French President, Emmanuel Macron, before his trip to Qatar. However, this did not prevent him from go to the locker room of the Morocco team, to congratulate the players after their fine career in this World Cup.
