The United States is finalizing a plan to deliver Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine, three US officials told Reuters on Tuesday, December 13, indicating that an official announcement could be made as early as this week.
kyiv has asked its Western supporters for air defense systems, including the American Patriots, in order to protect itself against the repeated bombardments carried out by Russia, in particular against energy infrastructures.
“It’s very, very significant,” commented Alexander Vindman, a retired colonel who was in charge of White House policy toward Ukraine during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an announcement could come Thursday.
The Pentagon’s plan must be approved by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and submitted for initialing by President Joe Biden.
The Pentagon declined to comment on the matter during a press briefing.
