America First Republicans have lobbied current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Ca.), for him to take a tougher stance on issues such as immigration if he is to secure their votes to be elected Speaker of the House.
Republicans hold a narrow majority at the start of the new legislative session, making every vote count if McCarthy is to secure the top job in the House.
He has already shown he is sensitive to their concerns after telling Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden’s homeland security secretary, that he must resign his post or the House will impeach him.
According to immigration experts, Biden and Mayorkas are largely responsible for the current immigration crisis. “Mayorkas has gutted our domestic immigration enforcement apparatus – meaning that once an illegal alien enters our country, it becomes virtually impossible to deport them,” said Matthew Tragesser of the Federation for US immigration reform.
House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy threatened President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas with impeachment during a border visit to El Paso, in Texas.
Mr McCarthy, who is vying for Speaker of the House of Representatives, said Republicans would seek Mr Mayorkas’ impeachment if he refuses to step down. He was joined by several of his fellow Republicans, including Rep. Tony Gonzales from Texas, who represents a southern border district, who made the trip to show their support for Border Patrol.
“His actions produced the largest wave of illegal immigration in history. Our country may never recover from Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty. This is why today I am asking the secretary to resign. He cannot and should not stay in that position,” McCarthy said.
“If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, Republicans in the House of Representatives will investigate every order, every action and every failure to determine if we can begin impeachment proceedings,” McCarthy added.
