RT Reports that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban described the EU sanctions against Russia on November 18 as a “step towards war”, intensifying his criticism of a Brussels strategy deemed “dangerous”.

“Anyone who intervenes economically in a military conflict takes a stand,” the conservative leader said in a radio interview.

“Little by little, we are sliding towards war,” he insisted, worrying about the accumulation of measures taken to sanction the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

Orban refuses that the EU takes out loans to help Ukraine

Viktor Orban also opposes the European Commission’s proposal to grant Ukraine aid of 18 billion euros for 2023, in the form of loans whose interest would be borne by the Member States.

“Hungary is not going to agree to EU members taking loans together to help Ukraine,” he told a conference, according to comments reported by the MTI news agency.

Rather, he advocates the payment of a sum, divided “equitably” between the Twenty-Seven. Hungary could provide up to 70 billion forints (170 million euros) under a bilateral agreement with Kyiv, he said.

While maintaining links with Russia, Viktor Orban regularly denounces the European strategy, even if he voted for all the European sanctions alongside his partners.

For him, it is the main reason for the economic setbacks of this Central European country. The economy contracted in the third quarter (compared to the second) and inflation exceeded 20%, even reaching 45% in food.

The government launched a “national consultation” on the subject and plastered posters around the country with a message flanked by a picture of a missile: “Brussels sanctions are ruining us.”

The Prime Minister said he was ready to “fight” a possible new package of measures and to ensure that Hungary, which is very dependent on Russian hydrocarbons, is “exempted”, as is the case for the embargo on oil.

The EU “on the verge of becoming a belligerent”, regrets Orban

“Now we are supplying destructive weapons, we are training Ukrainian soldiers on our own territory, we are imposing energy sanctions […] We become an integral part” of the conflict, he further argued during his appearance on the radio.

“We are not being shot at yet, but we are on the verge of becoming a belligerent. Europe is playing a very dangerous game,” he concluded.
