Reuters reports that US FCC commissioner visits Taiwan to discuss cybersecurity and telecommunications.

TAIPEI, U.S. Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr, will visit Taiwan this week, the de facto U.S. Embassy in Taiwan said on Wednesday, making him the country’s latest senior official to visit the island.

Carr will meet with “Taiwanese interlocutors” to discuss issues such as telecommunications and cybersecurity from Nov. 2-4, the American Institute in Taiwan said in a statement provided to Reuters.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry declined to comment. Its National Communications Commission did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

China, which claims the island as its own despite strong objections from the Taiwan government, has in the past reacted angrily to these official exchanges between Taipei and Washington.

China has stepped up its military activities near democratically-ruled Taiwan since August, when it conducted blockade drills around the island following a visit to Taipei by China’s president. United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

The Biden administration has sought to prevent tensions between Washington and Beijing, stoked by the visits, from escalating into conflict, repeating that such trips are routine.

The United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but is required by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself.

China has never ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control. The Taiwanese government claims that the People’s Republic of China has never ruled the island and therefore its claims of sovereignty are void.
