South Korea: at least 120 dead and 100 injured during Halloween festivities
During the night from Saturday to Sunday, at least 120 people died, crushed in a crowd movement in Seoul (South Korea). They were attending Halloween celebrations in the Itaewon district.

A nightmarish scene. Dozens of people suffered cardiac arrest this Saturday, October 29 around 10:20 p.m. (local time), victims of a stampede in Seoul. The toll is extremely heavy: at least 120 dead and 100 injured. “At 2:30 a.m. (Saturday 5:30 p.m. GMT), 120 people were killed and a hundred others injured”told the press at the scene of the disaster, a fire official from the South Korean capital, Choi Seong-beom.

“The large number of victims is due to the fact that many people were trampled during the Halloween party”, he added, believing that the toll could still increase. The victims appear to have been caught up in crowd movements in the very tight neighborhood of Itaewon where celebrations gather large numbers of people in the South Korean capital.

An investigation currently underway

While emergency officials said they had received some 80 calls informing them that many people were having difficulty breathing in this notorious district of the capital, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol immediately ordered them to administer quickly first aid gestures to the wounded in order to treat them. Its Prime Minister, Han Duck-soo, asked them to “do everything possible to minimize the damage”.

As for the mayor of the bereaved city, Oh Se-hoon, on an official visit to Europe, he decided to return to his country when the accident was announced, in order to be with the inhabitants, still in shock.

A local police officer, who requested anonymity, said details of the incident were under investigation. The Halloween celebrations this year are the first since the Covid-19 pandemic, in which South Koreans were forced to wear masks outdoors.
