The suspect in the violent hammer attack on Paul Pelosi at his home has been arrested…Here are the details. Early Friday morning, Paul Pelosi, husband of Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, was brutally attacked at his home in San Francisco by a man armed with a hammer.

The husband of the leader of the Democrats in Congress Nancy Pelosi was “violently attacked” Friday at the couple’s home and hospitalized, announced the spokesperson for the leader.

“Early this morning, an assailant entered the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi,” Drew Hammill said in a statement, AFP reports.

Paul Pelosi, 82, has been transferred to hospital, where he is receiving “excellent care”, added the spokesperson.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi was in Washington at the time of the attack, surrounded by her protection team, authorities said.

The White House condemned the attack and said President Joe Biden spoke with Nancy Pelosi in the morning.

“The president is praying for Paul Pelosi and the whole family of Speaker Pelosi,” his spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

The motives of the suspect, who has been taken into custody, are the subject of an investigation involving the federal police – the FBI – and the Capitol police, responsible for protecting members of Congress.

Less than two weeks before the midterm elections, several American elected officials have sounded the alarm against the renewed violence targeting them. According to Capitol Police, responsible for protecting members of Congress, threats against them have more than doubled since 2017, from 3,939 to 9,625 in 2021.

According to law enforcement, the attacker entered Ms Pelosi’s home through a back entrance. Since Speaker Pelosi was not present at the time, her security guard was not watching the house, as spouses of congressmen do not have assigned security guards.

In a brief statement after the attack, San Fransisco Police Chief William Scott identified the suspect as David Depape, 42, a Berkeley resident, and confirmed he was in custody.

According to a source who spoke to CNN, after entering the residence, Depape began shouting “Where’s Nancy?” Where is Nancy? »

Depape then attacked Pelosi, 82, with a hammer, causing blunt force injuries to his head and body. Although the extent of his injuries are not entirely clear, he was taken to hospital for treatment and will have to undergo brain surgery.

Law enforcement gathered outside Pelosi’s residence after the attack.

Speaker Pelosi’s spokesperson, Drew Hammill, commented on the attack, saying, “The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and ask that their privacy be preserved. for the moment. »

President Joe Biden reportedly called Speaker Pelosi to “express his support after this horrific attack”.

Senator Ted Cruz, despite being a major critic of Speaker Pelosi, put aside his political grievances and posted a message of condolences and well wishes for Paul on Twitter.

He wrote ,

“What happened to Paul Pelosi last night is horrible.

Heidi and I are praying for him, Nancy and the entire Pelosi family. May the protection of God be upon them.

We may have our political differences, but violence is always wrong and unacceptable. »

Depape is currently being held on attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon and other charges. The motive is still under investigation.

Earlier this year, Paul pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges after causing a serious collision on his way home from a party. He was sentenced to three years probation and five days in jail.
