Referendum on the self-determination of Zaporijjia and others, an implicit nuclear threat from the Europeans?

Published on 23.9.2022

Denouncing Wednesday, September 21 the “militarization” by Russia of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporijjia conquered by the Russians, several Western countries seem to implicitly brandish the nuclear threat.

And this the day after the announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that the referendums for the self-determination of Zaporizhia in addition to Donbass, and the Kherson region will be held as originally planned in the coming days, from September 23 to 27, 2022. An announcement made after he launched a partial mobilization of reservists.

In a joint statement adopted after a meeting in New York, reports AFP, the foreign ministers of Germany, Canada, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Ukraine as well as that the representatives of South Korea, the United States and Switzerland “strongly underlined that Russia’s seizure and militarization of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is the root cause of the current security threats and nuclear safety”.

“We recall that the increased risk of a nuclear accident will remain dangerously high as long as Russia is present at the Zaporizhia site,” they said.

Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose delegation is already at the nuclear site, joined in the waltz of warnings, indicating that the situation in this power plant , the largest in Europe, “is still deteriorating”, and warning that we “cannot afford the luxury of waiting for something catastrophic to happen”.

According to AFP, he was speaking after this meeting at the French representation to the UN, opened by President Emmanuel Macron.

The IAEA director said he had discussed it with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whom he met on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. No agreement was reached on the establishment of a protection zone around the plant, he agreed, specifying however that “the real negotiations on the parameters” of this zone were only “beginning” . “As long as the shelling continues, the risks are enormous,” he added.

This plant, which has been conquered by Russian forces since the first weeks of their military operation in Ukraine, launched on February 24, and by their Chechen allies, is the subject of regular bombardments, threatening its security and that of the entire region.

Paradoxically, it is the Russians who are accused of doing this, directly by kyiv and by the West, whose international agencies (and sometimes Russian agencies) spread an absurd pleonasm: “kyiv and Moscow reject responsibility and accuse each other of nuclear blackmail”.

On August 27, Russia announced that it had handed over to the UN Security Council evidence of the shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant by the Ukrainian armed forces. Later, at the beginning of September, the Russian ambassador to the UN complained that the IAEA did not designate the kyiv forces as those bombing the Zaporizhia power plant.

This Western silence, to which are added the presumed fears of their heads of diplomacy expressed in New York on Wednesday, on the increased risk of a high nuclear accident as long as Russia is present on the site of Zaporijjia make fear the worst for the Russians : a bombardment causing dangerous nuclear leaks and which is attributed to them.

This explains the recent warnings from the Vice-President of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, who declared this Thursday, September 22 that Moscow is able to use strategic nuclear weapons to protect areas in Ukraine. Recalling that the Donbass and regions of Ukraine will be annexed to Russia.
