Whereas rather this afternoon : USA: FBI releases almost fully redacted affidavit for Trump raid.

The new disclosure by the Department of Justice could support Trump’s legal team’s request to appoint a specialist attorney to conduct a lien review of items seized by the FBI from Mr Trump’s property in Florida during his unprecedented search on August 8.

At the same time, however, the department also revealed that its screening team has already completed its review of the documents – a sign that Trump’s request for a special master may be too late.

A special master is an independent third party sometimes appointed by a court in sensitive cases to review documents potentially covered by attorney-client privilege to ensure that investigators do not view them inappropriately.

Last weekend, Judge Aileen Cannon of the Southern District of Florida issued an order saying she was inclined to appoint an attorney.

She ordered the Justice Department to respond to Mr. Trump’s request and provide under seal a more detailed list of the items seized from his home.

On Monday, the Justice Department said it would comply with the request and file the information under seal by Tuesday.

In the document filed by the ministry, prosecutors said the screening team followed procedures set out in the warrant to deal with any material that might be covered by solicitor-client privilege, including showing it to the court for review. determined.

The ministry and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) are currently conducting a classification review of the seized documents, he added, noting that the ODNI is separately leading an “intelligence community assessment of the potential risk to national security” that could arise if these documents were exposed.

The search of Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach, ordered by Attorney General Merrick Garland, marked a significant escalation in one of several federal and state investigations that Mr. Trump faces in because of his mandate and his private affairs.

The department is investigating Mr. Trump for unlawfully withholding national defense information, a violation of the Espionage Act, and is also investigating whether he attempted to obstruct the investigation. criminal.

In an unusual move, last week the Justice Department unveiled a redacted copy of the legal document that outlines the evidence used to convince Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart to authorize a search warrant.

This document revealed that Mr. Trump had kept documents related to the best kept secrets in the country, including those relating to intelligence gathering and clandestine human sources.

The United States National Archives first discovered that Mr Trump kept classified documents in January, after he returned 15 boxes of presidential documents he had kept at Mar-a-Lago.

After the FBI searched his home this month, he took away additional material, including 11 more sets of classified documents.
