Outcry after Macron’s call on the French “to agree to pay the price of freedom”.

Published on 21.8.2022

On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Bormes-les-Mimosas, in the Var, Emmanuel Macron called on the French to “face the coming time”, in reference to the possible consequences for France of the Russian-Russian conflict. Ukrainian, particularly on the energy side.

“I am thinking of our people, who will need fortitude to […] agree to pay the price for our freedom and our values”, he declared in particular, thus encouraging the French to accept a situation partly linked to the Western anti-Russian measures adopted in recent months by Paris.

In fact, the words of Emmanuel Macron echo the risk of a shortage of natural gas which hovers in Europe, due in particular to certain Russian announcements concerning supply suspensions.

As AFP reports, the oil giant Gazprom announced on August 19 an interruption of its deliveries to Europe for three days, for “maintenance” reasons.

As a reminder, the Russian company had already warned in early August that Western sanctions would disrupt the proper functioning of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, while it is through it that Russian gas is currently transported to Europe, while Nord Stream 2 saw its authorization to operate suspended before the launch of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

“An uncontrolled president going to war”

In any case, the appeal of the French president has reacted several political figures.

For example, he was quickly hailed within the presidential party, like MEP Nathalie Loiseau who congratulated Emmanuel Macron for “speak to the French the language of truth and that of values”.

“A courageous statement”for his part commented the deputy Modem Frederic Petit.

But, simultaneously, the remarks of the tenant of the Élysée provoked strong criticism aimed at French policy on the Ukrainian file.

“Macron evokes “the war which thunders at our doors” and calls on us to “accept to pay the price of freedom”: by what right does this little war-hungry leader decide, without consulting parliament, to train us in this conflict!” for example castigated the MEP Gilbert Collard, honorary president of Reconquest.

“Another step in the very personal, but dangerous escalation for all French people of an uncontrolled war-mongering president. And to say that Parliament with its power of control, has exceptionally been authorized to resume its work only in October?!!”, reacted on Twitter the former mayor of Rambouillet, the Christian Democrat Jean-Frédéric Poisson.

“Why is Macron making the situation even worse? Is there a cause and effect relationship between the FBI’s detention of the files on Macron found at Trump’s house, and this new threatening statement testifying to his total obedience to the Deep State? from the UPR, François Asselineau.

“In reality, we are paying the price for Atlanticism and the scuttling of France’s interests; and the Russian economy is not on its knees,” pointed out Georges Kuzmanovic, founding president of the Sovereign Republic.

“Total madness! What else is Macron Psychopath preparing for us?! With his crazy allegiances, he is the worst enemy of our country!”, further thundered Florian Philippot, head of the Patriots.

“Note this vocabulary of war. After the Covid war, we are all at the “front”, he says. Macron had started with his July 13 speech to the military community on “moral strength.” To silence any opposition, he stages the sacred union,” said Nupes deputy for Hauts-de-Seine, Aurélien Saintoul, according to whom “the war in Ukraine provides a good pretext while the president no longer has an absolute majority in the National Assembly”.

“What are we already paying for? The “price of freedom”, or the price of the policy of Macron and his predecessors? The answer is in the question”, for his part wrote the former leader of the National Front, Jean-Marie Le Pen.

During the traditional interview of July 14, the Head of State endeavored to prepare the French for a difficult return to school and winter due to the conflict in Ukraine and tried, by outlining a series of reforms, to restore a course in his five-year term.

“We all have to prepare for [ce que la guerre] hard. The summer and the beginning of autumn will undoubtedly be very hard”, had launched the president, by evoking the situation of “war economy” with which the country is confronted.

“The real change of the last days […] it is the Russian decision to start cutting off the gas,” he argued, referring to the closure of the Russian Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline to Europe.
