In a virtual speech at the 14th BRICS Summit in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday hailed the BRICS mechanism for showing resilience and vitality in the current global crisis, and called on the mechanism to remain open and inclusive to welcome like-minded partners to join the larger BRICS family, while firmly opposing the abuse of unilateral sanctions and rejecting “small circles” built around hegemony.

According to Chinese analysts, the summit sent a strong signal to the world: apart from Western-dominated organizations, which have harmed the global economy by clashing block by block and abusing sanctions, there are mechanisms multilaterals formed by major non-Western economies, such as the BRICS, which can effectively represent the majority of the international community in making joint efforts to achieve recovery and overcome global challenges.

Xi noted that over the past year, the world has faced the continued spread of COVID-19, a torturous global economic recovery and increasingly salient issues of peace and security. Facing such formidable and complex circumstances, BRICS countries embraced the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, strengthened solidarity and coordination, and faced challenges together. The BRICS mechanism has shown resilience and vitality. BRICS cooperation has made solid progress and results.

Xi stressed that the summit is being held at a crucial moment in the evolution of mankind. The BRICS countries, as important emerging markets and major developing countries, must act with a sense of responsibility to bring a positive, stabilizing and constructive force to the world.

Chinese analysts said the BRICS are not just an organization formed by newly emerging economies, but now play a key role in the international order. Currently, the BRICS countries represent 40% of the world’s population, 25% of the world economy and 18% of world trade, and contribute 50% of world economic growth.

Wang Lei, director of the Center for BRICS Cooperation Studies at Beijing Normal University, told the Global Times that this is a clear trend in the changing global balance of power, which shows that power is no longer monopolized by the United States.

Trade connectivity among BRICS countries is getting closer and closer, especially in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Chinese government data, in the first five months of 2022, China’s total imports and exports with other BRICS countries increased 12.1% year-on-year, with a 20% increase with the Russia and 10% with India.

Later this month, two US-led multilateral mechanisms – the G7 and NATO – will also hold summits. These US-led, Western-trained blocs will continue to escalate tensions, confrontations and decoupling with US competitors like China and Russia, which could harm not only global recovery , but also to peace and security in the world.

At the end of the summit, the leaders of the five countries adopted the Beijing Declaration of BRICS 2022, which covers areas such as “Strengthening and reforming global governance”, “Working in solidarity to combat COVID-19″, ” Preserving Peace and Security”, “Promoting Economic Recovery”, “Accelerating the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, “Deepening People-to-People Exchanges” and “Institutional Development”.

Opposed to sanctions, the hegemonic Xi said “we must speak out for fairness and justice. We must encourage the international community to practice genuine multilateralism and defend the international system with the United Nations at its heart and the international order underpinned by international law, and urge the world to reject the cold war mentality and the confrontation of blocs, to oppose unilateral sanctions and the abuse of sanctions, and to reject the small circles built around hegemony by forming one big family belonging to a community with a shared future for humanity. »

In the speech held under the theme “Fostering High-Quality Partnership and Ushering in a New Era of Global Development” with other BRICS leaders, Xi said that “some countries today seek absolute security through the expansion of alliances. military forces to force other countries to take sides and create a block confrontation, to neglect other countries’ interests and rights and seek supremacy. If we allow this dangerous trend to develop, the world will become more turbulent and less secure. »

A Beijing-based senior international relations expert who requested anonymity said anyone familiar with international politics would easily see who these “few countries” criticized by the Chinese president are.

“Who caused the crisis between Russia and Ukraine by pushing NATO’s eastward expansion?” Who forced other countries to sanction Russia and ban energy imports to harm the global economy? Who used rumors and misinformation to impose illegal sanctions on Chinese products made in Xinjiang? Who is trying to form a new bloc-to-bloc confrontation in the Asia-Pacific region to copy the disaster of the Ukraine crisis to contain China’s development? The answer is crystal clear: the United States,” he said.

Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University of China, told the Global Times that “based on the experience of history, when a group of great powers tries to isolate a great power without respecting its legitimate interests and security concerns, to humiliate it through sanctions and compensation, in other words, to “push a great power into a corner”, this will lead to a world war. »

Therefore, the BRICS countries are striving to find a new type of international relations, to be inclusive and collective, to build a community with a shared future for humanity, and only in this way can we avert the crisis between the West and non-Western powers that is circling in the Western-dominated order, Wang Yiwei noted.

Emerging non-Western powersAt the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin said: “The countries that form this group have sought to intensify their cooperation on all global and regional issues. The BRICS format has steadily increased its prestige and international influence. This is an objective process, since the five BRICS countries, as we all know, have immense political, economic, scientific, technical and human potential. »

“We have what it takes to work together and deliver results to ensure global stability and security, sustained growth and prosperity, and improved well-being for our peoples,” Putin said.

Western media reported on the BRICS summit from a particular angle, claiming for example that an “isolated” Russia made an appearance at a multilateral event with other major economies for the first time since it launched its military operation in Ukraine.

According to the Beijing statement, the BRICS leaders said, “We have discussed the situation in Ukraine and recall our national positions as expressed in the appropriate forums, namely the UNSC and the UNGA. We support the talks between Russia and Ukraine. »

Feng Xingke, secretary general of the World Financial Forum and director of the Center for BRICS and Global Governance, told the Global Times that BRICS countries have a very similar stance on the Russia-Ukraine crisis, even though they don’t share any common ideology and do not have an alliance treaty like NATO, and that they did not carry out any specific coordination before announcing their position, which “proves that the BRICS really represent the position of the countries in development and emerging markets. »

Developing countries focus more on development and people’s livelihoods, so they have no interest in provoking conflicts and intensifying existing crises through arms supplies and sanctions, such as the Western countries have done, Feng said.

After the beginning of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the abuse of sanctions against Russia by the United States and Western countries has totally ruined and interrupted the world economic order.

“Middle Eastern and African countries like Egypt are facing a severe food crisis, and the inflation rate in Turkey and Argentina has reached 50%. These are all serious issues that should not be ignored by the international community,” Feng said.

The Ukraine crisis has only sidelined many issues in developing countries, as mainstream Western media is focusing on the Ukraine crisis, causing the international community to pay less attention and assistance to the countries. developing in regions like Africa and the Middle East, analysts said.

This means that BRICS is an organization formed by major economies that will pay attention to these issues, because there are many developing countries that have been included in the BRICS Plus platform, and trying to bring global recovery without solving the problems of developing countries will not succeed, experts noted.
