Gunmen massacre at least 50 worshipers in a Catholic church in Nigeria.

At least 50 people were killed in a suspected terror attack at a Catholic church in southwestern Nigeria on Sunday, after several gunmen opened fire during mass, according to reports.

The incident which claimed the lives of many innocent people, including women and children, happened at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Nigeria, according to Reuters.

The gunmen fired at people inside and outside the church, killing and injuring worshippers, according to an Ondo state police spokesman, Reuters reports. The police spokesman did not reveal the number of people killed at the scene, but a doctor at a local hospital said at least 50 bodies had been brought in and other injured people were being treated, reports The media.

Arakunrin Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu described the scene as “a great massacre”.

“What happened today is tragic. There is no better way to qualify it. This is the most tragic event! Horrible ! What we saw in America is child’s play compared to what happened here. That it happened in a church, to say the least, is highly condemnable. I am terribly sad,” Mr Akeredolu said.

Reverend Augustine Ikwu, spokesperson for the Catholic Church in Nigeria, reportedly released a statement on the horrific case.

“It is so sad that while Holy Mass was in progress, unknown gunmen attacked St. Francis Catholic Church…causing many casualties and many injuries and violating the church,” said Reverend Augustine Ikwu .

Ikwu said the bishop and priests emerged unscathed from the attack, according to Reuters.
Islamist terrorists have carried out attacks in northeast Nigeria, using armed gangs and kidnapping citizens for ransom, the outlet reports. Sunday’s attack took place in southwestern Nigeria, leaving the West African country in disarray.

Law enforcement has not confirmed the motive or identity of the attackers to date.
